"The beginning of this book was a bit of a struggle for me, but at about the halfway point the story really hit its stride and I just couldn’t stop. A group of strangers, hired to come together to assassinate the king…but who can be trusted? The stakes get high, secrets get revealed and the twists left me with my jaw on the ground. This ends on a cliffhanger and I will absolutely be picking up the next one when it is released. I’m glad I gave it a chance.
My favorite quotes:
“A thief, a strongman, a spy, an assassin, a nobleman, and an exiled prince add up to a ring of liars. Trust is a surefire way to wind up with a blade in your back.”
“Sometimes revenge is a long game and, as much as you want a small win now, the larger victory needs time to manifest. I am a man of few virtues, but patience is one of them.”
“I think I'm better off with nobody. Loving somebody is needing two hearts to live instead of just the one. You're better off alone.”"
"I want to start by saying this book is the beginning of a series. I think the biggest downside for me with this book is that we get the viewpoints of six characters. Although it was great having that much insight, I found myself having to make a chart of who everyone was because it is so hard to keep track with them changing every chapter. There is a lot of darkness pent up in this story but there are also light moments, humor, and love/ care. If you enjoy journey stories, action, deception, a ragtag group of criminals, with a dash of romance and twist and turns then I think you will enjoy this story. The world building and the character set up was better than I have read in a long time. I am so excited for book 2!"
"Made it around 80 pages and couldn’t continue. Too many POV’s. I’m sure others would love it, just not my cup of tea."

"The ending of this book was fun to read it raised my overall rating. However, it could’ve packed more of a punch for me. I love how the characters’ perspectives flowed together but I felt like I was being told rather than shown when it came to how they felt about each other. They all coupled up so quickly and mentioned how mistrusting they were but their actions didn’t portray that. I would’ve really loved if there was less focus on them ******* after each other and more bonding focused around trust and trails they faced together that played into the bigger story. Make the reader yearn for them to get along and finally come together as a team y’know? I feel like that would’ve made the betrayal so much more devastating. And we didn’t get to sit in the ‘betrayal’! Everything was explained right away and it just killed the tension entirely. It made the ending fall a little flat for me. Not sure if I’ll read the next book. I can’t lie, I almost DNF this book."
"This was an interesting enough fantasy book, it has romance in it but I don't really think it's romance heavy. Five Broken Blades is an epic fantasy with multiple povs that follows warriors, assassins, thieves, and women who poison as they all work towards the goal of assassinating the king. After a slow beginning, I got into it especially as the characters got fleshed out. None of the romance in this was memorable to me but I think it stands on its own as just a fantasy. I liked the diversity in the worldbuilding, action, and queer rep and I'm interested to see where the book goes from here. I think the main issue I had with this was the multiple povs and none of them stuck out to me. The ending has me hooked though and I really enjoyed how it ended and the cliffhanger. If you like action, intrigue, some romance with a group of killers/assassins working and traveling with each other then you should read this. Thank you to the publisher for this arc for an honest review.

Rating:3.5"
