Girl in Pieces meets The Way I Used to Be in this poignant and thought-provoking novel about a girl who must overcome her survivor's guilt after a fellow classmate is brutally murdered. I was one of five. The five girls Kyle texted that day. The girls it could have been. Only Jamie--beautiful, saintly Jamie--was kind enough to respond. And it got her killed. On the eve of Kyle's sentencing a year after Jamie's death, all the other "chosen ones" are coping in various ways. But our tenacious narrator is full of anger, stuck somewhere between the horrifying past and the unknown future as she tries to piece together why she gets to live, while Jamie is dead. Now she finds herself drawn to Charlie, Jamie's boyfriend--knowing all the while that their relationship will always be haunted by what-ifs and why-nots. Is hope possible in the face of such violence? Is forgiveness? How do you go on living when you know it could have been you instead?

"Very forgettable. It passes the time, but you’re left waiting for a climax that never comes. No suspense or thrill, and a romance that has no true conflict that doesn’t get resolved from one chapter to the next. In general the book had no real point that makes it special…u learn nothing knew u couldn’t deduce from the description of the story."
"this is the book i read this summer that got me back into reading after not reading voluntarily for almost two years. it’s real and emotional and realistic. i wouldn’t read it again but i really loved it and will always be appreciative of it for making me fall back in love with books"
"Good book that kept me reading until close the the end. Very slow"

"What happened to Jamie was awful. Awful really isn’t a strong enough word to describe what she had to endure in her last moments. As heartbreaking as the story was, it was hopeful, too. I feel like I say that often.. But heartbreaking & hopeful is kind of the common theme with stories as tragic as this. I loved the relationship that grew between..... And this right here is actually the exact moment that I realize the narrator was nameless. Her name was never mentioned at all?? ANYWAYS, I loved the bond & relationship that grew between her and Charlie throughout the story. She was there for him through his darkest times, and they grew together in the best possible way."

This had potential..oh so much potential. But god help me, when the story started becoming romantic with the romance drama slowly playing a role in this survivors guilt kind of story…it was a major turn off for me personally.
I liked how the book was going, getting to know everyone and everything, how to characters felt and so on..but it was halfway through the book that the second hand embarrassment REALLY set in…something about her involvement with two different guys (One being the dead girls boyfriend) made me almost rip my hair out so bad I had to close the book (idc if it’s dramatic…trust me)
The book could’ve gone it’s og route and had a god place with the MC getting over the trauma, but the moment it starting getting off track…it was a no go for me…"
"I wouldn't read it again, but it's a solid book. Pretty well written with characters that are relatable and situations that feel real. The beginning really hooked me and held me close the entire time. I flew through the book quickly and it was very hard for me to put down. The ending fell a little flat, but overall it's definitely worth the read. "
