""Secretariat" is an elegantly crafted, exhilarating tale of speed and power, grace and greatness, told with such immediacy that the reader is lost in the rush of horses and the clatter and ring of the grandstand."--Laura Hillenbrand, bestselling author of "Seabiscuit" Updated with a new preface by the author In 1973, Secretariat, the greatest champion in horse-racing history, won the Triple Crown. The only horse to ever grace the covers of "Time," "Newsweek," and "Sports Illustrated" in the same week, he also still holds the record for the fastest times in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. He was also the only non-human chosen as one of ESPN's "50 Greatest Athletes of the Century." The tale of "Big Red" is an enduring and inspiring classic, more than thirty years after its initial publication.

"Loved this book. I was 9 years old when Secretariat won the Triple Crown so horse races were not exactly on my radar. Decades later, I saw the movie and absolutely loved it. I was going thru some old “saves” on Facebook recently and found that I had saved the Belmont scene from the movie. I watched it at least 5 times in succession and each time I got goosebumps. I thought if the movie could do that, what about the actual true story? So I went searching and that is how I found this book. Some parts may be tedious to get through for the casual reader but I enjoyed the history of all the bloodlines and owners and farms, the details surrounding Secretariat’s syndication, etc. The descriptions of the races were thrilling. I found myself holding my breath as I read those. Mr. Nack definitely had a front row seat to Secretariat’s life and I’m grateful he chose to share it all with us in this book. I of course shed some tears but I grinned a lot too. Each time a race was discussed I took to Google search and watched the actual race in YouTube. Based on my reading of this book, I’d have to concur that Secretariat was indeed the best horse that ever lived. No other horse has beat his 1973 performance at the Belmont and I doubt one ever will. Really great book."
