The Ultimate Y2K Glitch....1632 In the year 1632 in northern Germany a reasonable person might conclude that things couldn't get much worse. There was no food. Disease was rampant. For over a decade religious war had ravaged the land and the people. Catholic and Protestant armies marched and countermarched across the northern plains, laying waste the cities and slaughtering everywhere. In many rural areas population plummeted toward zero. Only the aristocrats remained relatively unscathed; for the peasants, death was a mercy.2000 Things are going OK in Grantville, West Virginia. The mines are working, the buck are plentiful (it's deer season) and everybody attending the wedding of Mike Stearn's sister (including the entire membership of the local chapter of the United Mine Workers of America, which Mike leads) is having a good time.THEN, EVERYTHING CHANGED....When the dust settles, Mike leads a small group of armed miners to find out what's going on. Out past the edge of town Grantville's asphalt road is cut, as with a sword. On the other side, a scene out of Hell; a man nailed to a farmhouse door, his wife and daughter Iying screaming in muck at the center of a ring of attentive men in steel vests. Faced with this, Mike and his friends don't have to ask who to shoot. At that moment Freedom and Justice, American style, are introduced to the middle of The Thirty Years War.At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

"The optimism of these fictional small town Americans transported to 1600s Germany is a lot of fun. "

"This book came out in 2000 and was a best seller. Now it is available as a free download from Baen Books free library. There are over thirty books in the series now with more coming every couple of months because the author allows other writers to write in his universe.
The primiss is a small West Virginia town mysteriously appears in 17th century Germany in the midst of the thirty years war. This book, and those that follow are stories of the interaction and adaptation of ordinary twentieth century people to the new world they find themselves trapped in.
As you can imagine there is a cast of thousands. Interactions with everyone from a blacksmith in a nearby town, a war refugee trying to build a new life, to the king of Sweden and even the Pope.
There are culture clashes over everything from immodest American clothes to religious beliefs, to witch trials. The town is attacked by troops from the Holy Roman Empire, and the doctors are terrified they might face the black plague.
My point is that the setting is ripe with opportunities for stories of all kinds, and because Eric Flint is willing to open his universe to other authors, those opportunities are sized by a number of outstanding authors.
To make the series even richer, there are two companion series where related short stories are published as well. Ring of Fire is an anthology series of short stories by mostly famous authors. Grantville Gazette is an online publication of mainly fanfiction set in the 1632 universe. Hardcopy and ebook collections from the best of the Grantville Gazette are periodically published by Baen Books as well.
I was not sure where to post this introduction to this book and series because it is classified SciFi while it is mainly Fantasy dealing with History. An alternate History.
I hope a few of you will download the free introductory book in the series and see if you find it as entertaining and engaging as I did. Enjoy!"
