From the New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Keeper comes a “moody, suspenseful page-turner” (People, Best Book Pick) filled with mystery and spellbinding secrets.Living on her family’s idyllic lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, inquisitive, and precociously talented sixteen-year-old who loves to write stories. One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest child, eleven-month-old Theo, has vanished without a trace. He is never found, and the family is torn apart, the house abandoned. Decades later, Alice is living in London, having enjoyed a long successful career as a novelist. Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old Edevane estate—now crumbling and covered with vines. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone...yet more present than ever. A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies from a masterful storyteller, The Lake House is an enthralling, thoroughly satisfying read.

"Great mystery novel that was hard to put down! I love this book!"

"This was hands down the best book I’ve read in years. If six stars was available I would give this book six stars. Beautifully crafted and entirely unexpected how magnetic, gorgeous, and satisfying this book is. It isn’t just a cozy British mystery, it’s a brilliant unfolding of layer after layer of plot and story and character. Despite following a large cast of characters over three different time spans, I had no difficulty tracking each story and character perfectly. I had the deep satisfaction of figuring out the next step just a few pages before the characters in most cases. The descriptions are rich and entirely necessary to set the scene and move the plot forwards. <br/><br/>My single complaint is the final chapter: it would have been better to be about 25 pages longer in the end, to flesh out some of the complexities. A happy ending is nice but this one comes a bit too abruptly- a shock after such an expertly written novel. It would honestly be improved if the final chapter had simply been left out, if the author didn’t want to write out some of the nuances of the scenes which it implies happened between the denouement and this closing. <br/><br/>This is one mystery I can see myself reading again. 6/5 stars."

"<strong>Interesting and descriptive</strong><br/><br/>But a bit to descriptive for my taste. The story line kept me reading even when the detail was a bit overwhelming."
