It was a hell of a long shot....CIA assassin Fortune Redding is about to undertake her most difficult mission ever-in Sinful, Louisiana. With a leak at the CIA and a price placed on her head by one of the world's largest arms dealers, Fortune has to go off-grid, but she never expected to be this far out of her element. Posing as a former beauty queen turned librarian in a small bayou town seems worse than death to Fortune, but she's determined to fly below the radar until her boss finds the leak and puts the arms dealer out of play.Unfortunately, she hasn't even unpacked a suitcase before her newly inherited dog digs up a human bone in her backyard. Thrust into the middle of a bayou murder mystery, Fortune teams up with a couple of seemingly sweet old ladies whose looks completely belie their hold on the little town. To top things off, the handsome local deputy is asking her too many questions. If she's not careful, this investigation might blow her cover and get her killed.Armed with her considerable skills and a group of elderly ladies the locals dub The Geritol Mafia, Fortune has no choice but to solve the murder before it's too late.Louisiana Longshot is a humorous mystery set in the bayous of southern Louisiana. It has a cozy mystery feel and features a strong woman sleuth in a fish-out-of-water storyline. "The Miss Fortune Mysteries have become one of my all time favorite mystery series! Wonderful quirky characters, ceaseless shenanigans, laugh-out-loud situations, engrossing mysteries, and legitimately one of the most wholesome found-family-BFFs I have ever run across in thousands of books and decades of reading.
BUT, before you dive in, some Noteworthy Points
1 - if you are looking for romance, you will be disappointed. It takes a looooooong time for any romancing (like 7 or 8 books), and even once the couple(s) are established, the typical couple stuff is so far in the background as to be barely there at all. Also, zero spice. There is at most some smooching and some "morning after" scenes. Since i hate Lovey Dovey Stuff, this is completely fine for my tastes, but it definitely isn't for everyone
2 - These books came out before Cozy Mystery was its own genre. Thus, they are slightly less cozy than the one might expect. Think PG-13 for brief violence, injuy, intense situations, break-ins, and of course - murder (but no bad language). Reference to domestic abuse is pretty frequent, too, especially if an as$hole is the one being investigated.
3 - So. Many. Shenanigans. They are hilarious but they also often require a bit of suspension-of-belief, and they get more ridiculous as the series goes on.
4 - as with any long-standing series (currently 25 books), there are some duds along the way. However, I can confirm that it is totally ok to skip or even entirely skimm some of the more tedious ones (for me it was books 5ish through 9ish) if things start to drag. I can *also* confirm that, in my opinion, after a series of "meh" stories things 100% get even better once Swamp Spooks rolls around, which i believe is book #16 or #17"
"Best book series ever! I love the humor, the mystery, the suspense… I never know what Gertie will pull out of her bag or how many times Celia shows her panties. Plus, Fortune is a total badass. "

"Louisiana Longshot is a fun mystery and comedy in the same breath. The main character is a CIA agent forced to move to small-town Louisiana, and shenanigans ensue. The two little old ladies at the forefront of the story are the best characters and complete terrors in this book, and we aspire to be just like them when we get old. #louisiana #cia #swamp #mystery_and_detective #ewm_bookclub "
"Great cast of characters. Very funny. Over the top but still believable."
