A #1 New York Times Bestseller!Judy I. Lin's sweeping debut A Magic Steeped in Poison, first in a duology, is sure to enchant fans of Adrienne Young and Leigh Bardugo.I used to look at my hands with pride. Now all I can think is, "These are the hands that buried my mother."For Ning, the only thing worse than losing her mother is knowing that it's her own fault. She was the one who unknowingly brewed the poison tea that killed her—the poison tea that now threatens to also take her sister, Shu.When Ning hears of a competition to find the kingdom's greatest shennong-shi—masters of the ancient and magical art of tea-making—she travels to the imperial city to compete. The winner will receive a favor from the princess, which may be Ning's only chance to save her sister's life. But between the backstabbing competitors, bloody court politics, and a mysterious (and handsome) boy with a shocking secret, Ning might actually be the one in more danger.Praise for A Magic Steeped in Poison:A USA Today BestsellerA Publishers Weekly BestsellerAn ABA Indie BestsellerAn ABA Indies Introduce SelectionAn ABA Indies Next Pick"Beautifully written, from the setting to the magic system, A Magic Steeped in Poison is sure to enchant both fantasy lovers and cdrama aficionados. "DEVOURED this novel in 2 days. I opened the beautiful cover, expecting a sweet little story about magical tea and instead got assassination attempts, political turmoil, and a competition that felt very Triwizard Tournament. This book had me feeling like my 12 year old self who hid my book light in order to read past my bedtime. Bought the second book. Eagerly awaiting its arrival to my door. "
"There was so much to take in during the beginning stages of the book. This isn’t a bad thing! However, it can be overwhelming for some(tho not me). I thoroughly enjoyed how the author just threw the reader into the world of eastern mythology and gave immaculate detailings and depictions of tea ceremonies, magic, deities and a little bit of palace politics. What originally attracted me to this book was, I’ll be honest, the cover. Just look at the art on it😳Can you blame me? In the end, I stayed for the story, the characters and the fantastical world that the author presented. Highly recommend if you’re into eastern mythology, magic and a good cup of tea🍵❤️"
"I’ll admit, I picked this one up at my local library merely based on the cover art. I mean, can you blame me? Absolutely beautiful! But the plot also grabbed me and I’m glad I brought this one home. I love unique YA fantasies and this did not disappoint! The story did drag at times, but I was throughly impressed with the direction of the story and development of characters. Also, I highly recommend the audiobook if that’s your thing. The narration was amazing. Can’t wait to read the sequel! 4/5⭐️"
"Beautifully written! Tea concoctions: herbs, flowers, exquisitely detailed scents and flavors. Tonics, medicines, magical properties. There is an elegance in manner of descriptions with each ceremony.
Magic, romance and tradition wrapped up in a story about saving a family from a poison that caused so much pain.
Really enjoyed this book.
