"I wanna start by saying that some of the reviews I read complaining about the politics of the book were so wild to me. There’s one character that’s a socialist and another that is an environmentalist. It’s bonkers to think that authors want to appeal to 100% of the population with their books anyway. How boring would that be!!! What would even be the point!<br/><br/>Anyway! I liked this. I wasn’t super into it when I read the first 10% — seemed clever and like a classique book about daddy issues and grief — but as it went on i found it so extremely charming with its detail and imagination. The prose is gorgeous. <br/><br/>Didn’t love the fatphobic mom (surely there could have been other facets of their relationship to explore???) and as a digital journalist myself stories about writers at online publications often make me cringe with their lingo and cursing of millennials and questionable ethics, but I was willing to ignore that element of the story because I found it just so darn charming and refreshing. It was so easy to read, so warm, and so alive. The mystery wasn’t entirely compelling (though it was surprising) and the protagonist could be frustrating (girl same!) but i felt the novel’s imperfections created something beautiful. <br/><br/>Tie racks, Van Morrison, opposites, off-season celebrations, poems, and so on.
