Attica Locke
A "heartbreakingly resonant" thriller about the explosive intersection of love, race, and justice from a writer and producer of the Emmy-winning Fox TV show Empire (USA Today)."In Bluebird, Bluebird Attica Locke had both mastered the thriller and exceeded it."-Ann Patchett When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules -- a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the lone star state, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home. When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders -- a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman -- have stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment. Darren must solve the crimes -- and save himself in the process -- before Lark's long-simmering racial fault lines erupt. From a writer and producer of the Emmy winning Fox TV show Empire, Bluebird, Bluebird is a rural noir suffused with the unique music, color, and nuance of East Texas.

"The beginning took a lot to get into and honestly the end wasn't good enough to make the whole thing worth it. It wasn't a bad book, but I would not recommend. It just didn't read easily and the ending left some things unanswered"

"An excellent mystery! I’ve been eager to read this for a while, especially since it won the Edgar Award this year! It definitely didn’t disappoint, but I really hope this is a series since the ending was sort of cliffhanger-y for a stand-alone. But it was perfectly paced and really highlighted the racial issues that still exist today across the US, but especially in Texas. I visit there often, and this book highlights both the good and bad in a thoughtful and nuanced way, and is definitely a must read for mystery fans!!"

"I really like the theme, even though people don’t like daren (main character) because he’s a black man investing 2 murders one white and one black but he doesn’t give up because he feels that cases that deal with a black person and a white person are personal to him. this book is very heavy about racial injustice and there is a white man saying a derogatory term to daren.
