"Thank you to Emily Tesh and Tor for the super early advanced reader's copy - physical copy at that!

When I cracked this book open, the first thing I saw was the list of trigger warnings, and immediately paused, anxious. Then I continued and started reading and for the life of me, I could. not. put. it. down. I literally ran out of annotation tabs that my parents had just gotten me for christmas reading this book! Once I got a little into the book, I realized - or at least it seemed to me - likely to be a commentary on military - especially with there being a non fiction of the same/similar name about world war I.

[bc:Some Desperate Glory: The World War I Diary of a British Officer, 1917|625692|Some Desperate Glory The World War I Diary of a British Officer, 1917|Edwin Campion Vaughan|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1265506559l/625692._SX50_.jpg|612046]

I feel like the hard hitting and triggering topics were handled super well and I loved the character arc that Kyr goes through - I even ranted to a friend about it and almost - ok fine I teared up when it was over, especially assuming this is a standalone. I cannot wait to have a hardcover copy in my hands in April. The writing was so exquisite, and I believe this is the author's first full length novel? And if that's correct, this is one hell of a way to break into the novel industry and I feel so thankful and lucky to have gotten to read this so ahead of time. I even had a bookmark from my youngest sibling for christmas that perfectly matched that will be in the instagram review posts!

It's been a while since I've even been interested in science fiction, much less a space opera, and this did it for me, but good luck replicating whatever this book did because I don't think I can read anyone else even attempt to replicate this sort of story. Phew, did I make it without spoilers? I shall be returning in April to update with ALL the spoilers because there are lines that are spoilers that I need to share ugh!"
"Okay, what an amazing story. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because sometimes the details were a bit hard to follow and I did spend a good chunk of time reading this confused.

First of all, the character growth for Kyr was so good. She was a straight up jerk for more than half of this book, and it was really hard to like her. She treated people (and aliens) like crap and was so singularly focused on being the best - it was hard to like her. But the slow way she started to realize this about herself and the small ways she started to change were just perfect. And while we're talking about character growth - I loved Avi. I love that even though, yes, he was ultimately kind of a bad guy, he was still a good guy too without the author having to completely change who he was. He was a perfect example of morally grey, in my opinion.

The multiple dimensions were written really well. They made sense and they were integral to the story and Kyr's development.

Lastly - Yiso!! All the hugs for Yiso.

Overall, a great read for any scifi lover!"
