"It is two hundred years since the deity known as the Absolved went mad and destroyed the Kingdom of Alnachim, transforming it into the Execration, a blasted wasteland filled with nameless terrors. For decades, desperate souls have made pilgrimage to the centre of this cursed land to seek the Mad God's favour, their fate always unknown. Now a veteran warrior known only as Pilgrim, armed with a fabled blade inhabited by the soul of a taunting demon, must join with six others to make the last journey to the heart of the Execration. Allied with a youthful priest, a beast-charmer, a duplicitous scholar, an effete actor and two exiled lovers, Pilgrim must survive madness, malevolent spirits, unnatural monsters and the ever-present risk of treachery, all so that the Mad God might hear his prayer and, perhaps, grant redemption. But can sins such as his ever be forgiven?"--Provided by publisher

"High fantasy will always be an enjoyable genre for me to read. A Pilgrimage of Swords was exactly the gritty fantasy I like reading. It was a fast-paced adventure story with plenty of fighting and magic. I like having a main character that's not a greenie like most main characters of this style of writing, older main characters are not as popular as human culture seems to revolve around the young and hungry. This is his redemption ark, which feels like a new way to approach a series.
The writing is good if brief, we bounce from important events to important events. This style has it's ups and downs. The positive of this is that you are never board, continuous action plagues this book and as it's shorter it's impressive that it still fits so much in, however, you lose character development when you do this, and I found it harder to get connected to any character expect Pilgrim. Characters that you care about matter immensely because you'll care much more about how a story will turn out.
- Why are Gods supposed to know what humans want if humans don't know themselves?
- What would you pray for if you had gone on this pilgrimage?"
