"High fantasy will always be an enjoyable genre for me to read. A Pilgrimage of Swords was exactly the gritty fantasy I like reading. It was a fast-paced adventure story with plenty of fighting and magic. I like having a main character that's not a greenie like most main characters of this style of writing, older main characters are not as popular as human culture seems to revolve around the young and hungry. This is his redemption ark, which feels like a new way to approach a series.
The writing is good if brief, we bounce from important events to important events. This style has it's ups and downs. The positive of this is that you are never board, continuous action plagues this book and as it's shorter it's impressive that it still fits so much in, however, you lose character development when you do this, and I found it harder to get connected to any character expect Pilgrim. Characters that you care about matter immensely because you'll care much more about how a story will turn out.
