"Stars & Smoke is everything I want in a young adult adventure novel- enemies-to-lovers (!!!), a pop star boy, a secret agent girl (and y’all know how much I love spies and secret agents), and one big espionage mission. Fortunately for me, Marie Lu delivered on exactly what she promised.
This novel was brilliantly written, and I loved every second of it. The characters were well-developed and entertaining, I especially loved the spy Sydney Cossette. The popstar Winter Young was also great. As for the plot, it’s a spy thriller with plenty of action and steamy romance sprinkled in- it’s definitely upper young adult level romance.
My favorite part of the novel was definitely the secret agent and espionage aspects of the story. I’ve loved spy stories since I was young; Black Widow is my favorite Avenger and one of my favorite book series is the Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter. Would I have loved this novel without all of the spy stuff? Yes, but probably not as much as the novel wouldn’t have a plot otherwise (lol).
I’m eagerly waiting for the next novel but for now, I’m giving Stars & Smoke by Marie Lu 5 out of 5 stars."

"I totally love the fun, fast paced young spy novel. It’s a great young adult read with charisma and characters that enchant the reader to want to keep on. Marie Lu has a talent that is honestly rare and manages to create a storyline that’s create, relatable, plot evoking and just fun for the everyday reader. I liked how Winter’s character was like an onion. Every chapter showed more depth and layers. Then pair it with Sydney and the love hate relationship between them brought spark and tension to the story I couldn’t help but love. Plus, the story doesn’t go how one may predict so I love that there’s a plot twist. This was a tad outside my normal go to genre. But that makes it all the better when I feel like I’ve been entertained and drawn into another world that makes me root for the characters that are not part of the fantasy reads I typically go for. Kudos to Wu and May she have many more successes. <br/>"

"The cover drew me in, the plot drew me in even more.<br/><br/>I had no idea this was an espionage book going in, and though the beginning was a little slow, once I hit that quarter mark, I was in it for the long haul. I loved these characters and their mission. I was always on the edge of my seat. And the twist at the 50% mark had me reeling. As did the plot twist at the end!<br/><br/>This romance pulled on all my heartstrings. I think our main characters had fantastic chemistry. This is not your typical bodyguard romance. There is so much adventure and plot surrounding these lovable characters, and I understood their motivations so well.<br/><br/>I love the other relationships portrayed in this book, too, especially concerning Winter's friendships. It's great to see characters with good support systems.<br/><br/>I cannot wait for the next installment with these characters. I'm so excited to see more!"
