Soon they are busy discovering the summertime magic of Arundel’s sprawling gardens, treasure-filled attic, tame rabbits, and the cook who makes the best gingerbread in Massachusetts. But the best discovery of all is Jeffrey Tifton, son of Arundel’s owner, who quickly proves to be the perfect companion for their adventures. The icy-hearted Mrs. Tifton is not as pleased with the Penderwicks as Jeffrey is, though, and warns the new friends to stay out of trouble. Which, of course, they will—won’t they? One thing’s for sure: it will be a summer the Penderwicks will never forget.Deliciously nostalgic and quaintly witty, this is a story as breezy and carefree as a summer day.

"I'm curious if I would've liked this when I was younger.

I did feel the voices of the girls were distinct and at least the three older girls' voices rang true for their age; I did feel Batty seemed older than 4. I believe we're supposed to find their dad charming, but I generally found him absent and absent-minded. These girls were basically caring for themselves--I'm not even sure what he did all day. He just showed up to say goodnight. Mrs. Tifton was the "villain" but I understood at least some of her irritation--I wouldn't want kids running through my garden either and the Penderwick girls could be overbearing. I was glad Jeffrey and her seemed to be working towards a better relationship in the end."
"Great book to get kids to read!! "

"The Penderwicks is perhaps my greatest comfort book. Their adventures are a perfect modern twist on Little Women, and I adore their eccentric family. Jeffrey and Churchie (and the tomato man) are sweet and loveable, and Mrs. Tifton and Dexter serve as excellent "villains." This is one of those books I may always revert back to after having read too many dark YAs or as light reading before bed."
