Lady Emily Hardcastle is an eccentric widow with a secret past. Florence Armstrong, her maid and confidante, is an expert in martial arts. The year is 1908 and they've just moved from London to the country, hoping for a quiet life. But it is not long before Lady Hardcastle is forced out of her self-imposed retirement. There's a dead body in the woods, and the police are on the wrong scent. Lady Hardcastle makes some enquiries of her own, and it seems she knows a surprising amount about crime investigation... As Lady Hardcastle and Flo delve deeper into rural rivalries and resentment, they uncover a web of intrigue that extends far beyond the village. With almost no one free from suspicion, they can be certain of only one fact: there is no such thing as a quiet life in the country. Revised edition: This edition of A Quiet Life In The Country includes editorial revisions.

"I am listening to this series in audiobook version—which is great! But the story itself is enjoyable. It’s a typical cozy mystery set in historical England and there are the tropes of the feisty lady with her feisty ladies’ maid who have an unexpectedly collegial relationship, but the writing is so good that I am thoroughly enjoying it. In terms of the audio version, I often struggle with audiobooks as the narrator can make or break the story, and/or the story is such that I get impatient and think, “I could read this faster and get through it!” But in this instance, after listening to the first one I immediately downloaded the next two in the series. If you’re looking for a light, fun, engaging read, this novel will tick those boxes. (By the way, I spent much of the first few chapters of this book wondering if I’d gotten it wrong and there were novels that came before it, but there aren’t. The author provides a backstory for the characters in a way that makes you think you missed reading something previous tot his, but be patient. Eventually it gets fleshed out a bit, and you realize what’s important to the story versus what’s just background.)"
"<strong>Great female sleuthing combo, I'm hooked</strong><br/><br/>I have stumbled upon a new mystery series. <br/>I absolutely adore the relationship between Lady Hardcastle and Ms Armstrong. It made the biok so much more fun. They are clever and comical and work famously as a pair.<br/>Lady Hardcastle and her lady's maid Ms Armstrong move from London to a small country town in order to live a more quiet and peaceful life. But a murder interrupts their peace. As they try to get settled in their new environment they also find themselves in the middle of an investigation that proves to be more complicated than they first thought."
