"I could not finish of course. The characters were very bland and the prince was so nice it was almost nauseating. I'm sorry but you can't tell me a spoiled rich boy would grow up to hang on every whim of a 16 year old. I did enjoy the fact that the princess was overweight instead of the typical type you see in these roles. And the godstone, she has been alive 16 years and knows nothing about it or the places around her. I'm sure she becomes a better heroine as the story progresses but in the beginning she is so boring and has no real character at all so even if she did progress I'm not sure I would even like her then. I might be just biased about the whole thing because I'm really getting out of touch with YA fantasies."
"Ooooohhh did I ever love this book! A relatable main character with all of her insecurities and flaws who grows as a person - yet not an anti-hero. Incredible character arcs that are both believable and intimate. The developing religious and magical lore is both familiar and unique. The author walks the delicate line between making a statement about religions without being offensive AND without it feeling forced or "woke.""
"Quick reaction: I'd like to gush about this book. First off, I love love love that The Girl of Fire and Thorns features a big main character, one that is so unsure of herself in the beginning. It was just so refreshing to see Carson writing about a girl who loved food, who had these doubts, who didn't feel pretty and couldn't see why a king would ever marry her and not her wonderful sister. The story of Elisa coming into her own with her power and her destiny was one I thoroughly enjoyed. I also really liked some of the side characters in this book, like Hector and Cosme and the mysterious Ximena."

"What a beautiful and awesome story! I was pulled in right away when I picked up this book. For the life of me, I couldn't put it down. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a fantasy novel as much as I enjoyed this. I have a feeling this story is going to be epic.

Rae Carson did not pull any punches in this book. At all. I can't believe how much I held my breath and forced myself not to speed read just to find out what happens next! Besides being utterly amazing, it was also heartbreaking. I felt every emotion along side Elisa in this book. From fear, sadness, anger, jealousy, and happiness.

Elisa wasn't like every other heroine that I've read about in YA. She isn't some stick thing girl with self esteem issues. She's overweight with self esteem issues. There are a number of reasons why I liked this beginning for Elisa. We see her grow and change and it definitely plays a part. Elisa is not ordinary and her strength showed as she faced her fears and stood up for what she believed in.

When I finished this book, I had mixed reactions. I loved it! I need to get my hands on the second. The other reaction, was contemplation. I sat and thought about what I had just read. More than "OMG Best Book Ever!", but about the trials and suffering Elisa goes through in the book. While being in a fantasy world, it makes the novel feel true. This is definitely on my must watch series. I highly recommend that everyone adds this to their must need books. Brilliant."
"Fantasy-forward with a romantic subplot, compelling arc for the main character. "
