After thirty years, the only human engagement with Area X—a seemingly malevolent landscape surrounded by an invisible border and mysteriously wiped clean of all signs of civilization—has been a series of expeditions overseen by a government agency so secret it has almost been forgotten: the Southern Reach. Following the tumultuous twelfth expedition chronicled in Annihilation, the agency is in complete disarray. John Rodrigues (aka "Control") is the Southern Reach's newly appointed head. Working with a distrustful but desperate team, a series of frustrating interrogations, a cache of hidden notes, and hours of profoundly troubling video footage, Control begins to penetrate the secrets of Area X. But with each discovery he must confront disturbing truths about himself and the agency he's pledged to serve. In Authority, the second volume of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, Area X's most disturbing questions are answered . . . but the answers are far from reassuring.

"While reading I got confused at times and I think it was because of his writing style. It read like a thriller to me at times too but it was due to the nature of the main character. However, the book is definitely creepy all right. For me the ending was great and it made me want to continue on reading. #3 of the southern reach trilogy here I come."
"Left me feeling genuinely paranoid. Not for everybody, but it was basically my perfect book"

"<b><i>HOLY ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!</i></b> This was SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! It took me while to get into, but once I did, I was Hooked and didn't want it to end (hence why it's taken me over a month to read, that and school lmao)!!!!!!!!! I have too many feelings that are inexorable to articulate, but this series and the way it was written feels So so familiar and comfortable to me!!!!!!!!!!"
"Also very strange, but significantly more sinister and haunting. Most of the story takes place in the headquarters of the Southern Reach and we get a more traditional suspense novel filled with interpersonal intrigue. The tone and style of this book is much more conventional than the first. I still have no idea where this series is going to end up."
