"This was just all sorts of fantastic! I wish I had started reading this series sooner, but I’m glad I’ve discovered it now! Elizabeth Peters (aka Barbara Mertz) is my new idol. Not only was she a wonderful mystery writer, as evidenced by this delightful novel, she got a PhD in Egyptology back in the 1950s! She was a pioneer and a true feminist, and I can’t wait to read more of her work! This truly was everything I love in a novel: an amateur detective fighting off restrictive conventions (and clothing) in the late 1800s and fighting actual bad guys using a iron parasol. The dry wit sprinkled throughout the novel made me laugh out loud, and there was even some Pride and Prejudice inspired romance added to the mix. I loved it and I definitely want to continue reading of the adventures of Amelia Peabody, because she’s a total 19th century badass."

"There are 20 books in the AP #series. Highly recommended. My favorite series ever read & listened to (nar. by Barbara Rosenblat). I’ve actually listened to it twice because I loved it so. Be prepared to fall in love and become friends with these characters. The 20th book was ghostwritten due to Elizabeth Peters death. It is the only book that I struggled with from this series. Will likely revisit to see if I can make sense of what felt like a very confused reminiscence during a soft crime. "

"I've read the entire series and then some. I have a least favorite, but I couldn't pick a favorite because I loved Amelia all to pieces and just recommend reading her entire journey in order. Even my least favorite. Hah. "

I had a huge Egyptology obsession when I was a kid and have always been self-sufficient, with a tendency towards solving mysteries, getting myself into trouble, and a romantic swoon aspect juxtaposed with ‘tomboy’ sensibilities. Needless to say, I identified with Amelia from the beginning."
