For readers of Jon Krakauer and Douglas Preston, the critically acclaimed author and journalist Jon Billman's fascinating, in-depth look at people who vanish in the wilderness without a trace and those eccentric, determined characters who try to find them. These are the stories that defy conventional logic. The proverbial vanished without a trace incidences, which happen a lot more (and a lot closer to your backyard) than almost anyone thinks. These are the missing whose situations are the hardest on loved ones left behind. The cases that are an embarrassment for park superintendents, rangers and law enforcement charged with Search & Rescue. The ones that baffle the volunteers who comb the mountains, woods and badlands. The stories that should give you pause every time you venture outdoors.Through Jacob Gray's disappearance in Olympic National Park, and his father Randy Gray who left his life to search for him, we will learn about what happens when someone goes missing. Braided around the core will be the stories of the characters who fill the vacuum created by a vanished human being. We'll meet eccentric bloodhound-handler Duff and R.C., his flagship purebred, who began trailing with the family dog after his brother vanished in the San Gabriel Mountains. And there's Michael Neiger North America's foremost backcountry Search & Rescue expert and self-described "bushman" obsessed with missing persons. And top researcher of persons missing on public wildlands Ex-San Jose, California detective David Paulides who is also one of the world's foremost Bigfoot researchers. It's a tricky thing to write about missing persons because the story is the absence of someone. A void. The person at the heart of the story is thinner than a smoke ring, invisible as someone else's memory. The bones you dig up are most often metaphorical. While much of the book will embrace memory and faulty memory--history--The Cold Vanish is at its core a story of now and tomorrow. Someone will vanish in the wild tomorrow. These are the people who will go looking.

"Read this for the True Crime monthly book pick. The book itself is about the idea that people often go missing in North America and there is almost no checks and balances for how to track them. Often times, it’s people who are out on adventures into the wild but in some ways, that’s the issue as what may seem normal is really a serial killer out there (American Predator). The book spends a lot of time on one person which for me does takeaway from my general view of the book as is often the case, the author gets way too involved on it. "
"This was a unique take on a true crime book. It mainly follows the disappearance of Jacob Gray and the search and rescue attempts made to find him, but also gets into other disappearances as well. I did not realize there isn’t a true tracking system of how many people disappear in national parks, and it was very interesting to read about how these kind of search and rescues are handled. I felt that it started off strong, but ended feeling more like a personal journal detailing day to day life with Jacob’s father. It’s worth noting that several family members have come out stating that the author misrepresented Jacob, so it’s unfortunate that other aspects of missing cases were not focused on more. This book caught my interest with missing people in wildlands, so I will definitely be looking for other books related to this topic."
"It's hard to say that I really enjoyed this book because of how sad the stories are inside, but this book was fantastic. I'm very interested in missing person cases, I've heard a couple of the cases but Jon added more things in that I never knew. I also enjoyed Jon's writing style, a lot of missing person cases are very impersonal and read just like a news report. Jon really sucked me into each story and I got so connected to the cases that I found myself shedding tears for the people involved. Jacob's story really got to me, I find myself still thinking about his case from time to time. If you are interested in missing person cases or want to learn more about them I would highly recommend this book.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for providing me with a free ARC in exchange for my honest review."
