Demigods Nico di Angelo and Will Solace must endure the terrors of Tartarus to rescue an old friend in this thrilling adventure co-written by New York Times #1 best-selling authors Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. Percy Jackson fans, rejoice! Nico and Will have a book of their own! A Kirkus Reviews' Best Middle Grade Book of 2023 As the son of Hades, Nico di Angelo has been through so much, from the premature deaths of his mother and sister, to being outed against his will, to losing his friend Jason during the trials of Apollo. But there is a ray of sunshine in his life--literally: his boyfriend, Will Solace, the son of Apollo. Together the two demigods can overcome any obstacle or foe. At least, that's been the case so far... Now Nico is being plagued by a voice calling out to him from Tartarus, the lowest part of the Underworld. He thinks he knows who it is: a reformed Titan named Bob whom Percy and Annabeth had to leave behind when they escaped Hades's realm. Nico's dreams and Rachel Dare's latest prophecy leave little doubt in Nico's mind that Bob is in some kind of trouble. Nico has to go on this quest, whether Mr. D and Chiron like it or not. And of course Will insists on coming with. But can a being made of light survive in the darkest part of the world? and what does the prophecy mean that Nico will have to "leave something of equal value behind?" Nico will have to face demons both internal and external as his relationship with Will is tested to the core in this standalone adventure featuring two of the most popular characters in the Percy Jackson saga.

"I’ve genuinely never cried so much over a book before, this was beautiful and the perfect way to show Nico and Will’s story; it’s everything I wanted from a solangelo book and I’m so happy that this book exists

the only thing I’d say that I didn’t like is the number of pop culture references, it feels less timeless than the og pjo books, but I didn’t mind it that much

CWs: grief, violence, blood, minor homophobia, outing"
"3.5 stars

This is so therapist coded. I spent the first half of this book lowkey hating because all I could think was that Nico is trying way too hard to be emo and really needs to work through his inner demons before he gets into a relationship. Then in the second half Nico defeats his inner demons and names them Coco Puffs, so I guess all is well."
"This book is really sweet. I’ve been reading Riordan’s books for around 10-12 years now, and it makes me so happy to see how he’s been making an effort to include more diverse protagonists and characters in the last few years. It’s amazing to see queer teens- especially queer teen protagonists- in a popular universe like Riordan’s. This story is an epic adventure as usual, but it also treats its queer characters and their trauma with so much care. Riordan and Oshiro did a good job. I would’ve loved to have read this book in middle school when I really needed it. I am so glad that teens and preteens now have books like this. And of course, it’s great to see Nico be the protagonist of a new story!

My two complaints are that the dreams became pretty repetitive after a while, and the whole thing with Nico being the “father” of the cacodemons (which were created from his trauma without his knowledge) to be kind of creepy. The whole teen parenthood wording seemed weird and unnecessary, when it could’ve been avoided."
