The daughter of one of the South’s most famous Baptist preachers discovers a shocking secret about her father that puts her at odds with both her faith and her family in this debut novel. “Spellbinding…Revival Season should be read alongside Alice Walker’s The Color Purple and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus.” —The Washington Post A New York Times Book Review Editors’ ChoiceEvery summer, fifteen-year-old Miriam Horton and her family pack themselves tight in their old minivan and travel through small southern towns for revival season: the time when Miriam’s father—one of the South’s most famous preachers—holds massive healing services for people desperate to be cured of ailments and disease. But, this summer, the revival season doesn’t go as planned, and after one service in which Reverend Horton’s healing powers are tested like never before, Miriam witnesses a shocking act of violence that shakes her belief in her father—and her faith. When the Hortons return home, Miriam’s confusion only grows as she discovers she might have the power to heal—even though her father and the church have always made it clear that such power is denied to women. Over the course of the following year, Miriam must decide between her faith, her family, and her newfound power that might be able to save others, but if discovered by her father, could destroy Miriam. Celebrating both feminism and faith, Revival Season is a “tender and wise” (Ann Patchett) story of spiritual awakening and disillusionment in a Southern, Black, Evangelical community.

"This isn’t a subject I’d typically read about, but this book immediately drew me in. Miriam was so incredibly likeable and I couldn’t wait to find out how this would end. "

"Revival Season by Monica West is a book I hold close to my heart because it came into my life at a time of redefining and deconstructing my own personal beliefs.

Miriam is the daughter of a Baptist preacher who is known for his healing revivals. After her father is involved in a church scandal, she looks at her father and her faith in a different way. During this time, Miriam discovers her own healing powers. In a community where women “can’t” be healers because “God doesn’t use women in that way” she is confused on what to do and she begins healing others in secret.

I relate to Miriam a lot. I was raised in an evangelical church and have been to many revivals myself. I feel like I was at church more than I went to school. And for the first half of my childhood, my school did incorporate Christian based teachings. I also understood how Miriam felt when she realized certain beliefs she was taught were lies. My heart really hurt for Miriam (and also her mother) throughout this novel.

I appreciate this author for telling the story without being “preachy.” This story challenges the deep roots of patriarchal conditioning in the Christian community, which is necessary. An amazing debut novel from Monica West!"
"Beautifully written and your heart will break. The ending might not be traditionally satisfying but it’s well done and makes you feel and think. "
