Within hours the general’s wife is murdered. Then the dominoes really start to fall. Somewhere inside the vast worldwide fortress that is the U.S. Army, Reacher is being set up as a fall guy with the worst enemies a man can have. But Reacher won’t quit. He’s fighting a new kind of war—against an enemy he didn’t know he had. And against a conspiracy more chilling, ingenious, and treacherous than anyone could have guessed. "Just finished The Enemy by Lee Child, and wow, what a ride! This one is a prequel, so we get to see Jack Reacher back in his Army days, working as a Military Police officer. It kicks off with the odd death of a two-star general in a seedy motel, and from there, Reacher uncovers a much bigger conspiracy within the military.
One thing I loved about this book is how it digs into Reacher’s past and shows his sharp instincts, loyalty, and absolute refusal to back down, even when the entire system seems stacked against him. Major Stan Lowrey is a solid ally, and I really liked Summer, a smart and tough MP who works with Reacher on the case. On the flip side, Lieutenant Colonel Willard is such a satisfying antagonist, you’ll want to see Reacher take him down.
There’s action, suspense, and twists in all the right places. And even though this book is packed with military details, it’s not overwhelming, Child balances it perfectly with the mystery and character dynamics.
I gave it 4.5 stars because it’s not just a great thriller, it also fills in some fascinating backstory for Reacher. If you’re a fan of the series or just love a well-paced mystery with some gritty action, you’ll love this one. Definitely worth picking up!"
