Zadie Smith
One of the most iconic fictional debuts of all time turns 25 this year!‘What’s past is prologue...’First published in the year 2000, Zadie Smith’s White Teeth was one of the most celebrated novels of the new millennium. Adored by critics and readers alike, it remains a perennial bestseller, which still delights with the audacity of its scope and vision, its fresh-minted style, and the wit and warmth of its voice.Funny, generous and big-hearted, it deals – among many other things – with friendship, love, war, three cultures and three families over three generations, one brown mouse, and the tricky way the past has of coming back and biting you on the ankle.A life affirming, riotous must-read of a book, it won the Guardian First Book Award, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction and the Whitbread First Novel Award.‘Curl up with it, savour every sentence, then turn around and reread’ The Times‘The outstanding debut of the new millennium’ Observe

"The first Zadie Smith novel and the second I’ve read so far (NW was my first). It’s beautifully written and the characters are well developed. The first few chapters felt very slow and full of details I couldn’t care about. However, the amount of humour is what kept me going. Didn’t know it’s got a TV adaptation until moments ago. Will probably have a look. "
"A flexuous saga of ethics, ideals, passions, and relationships between three very different but close knit families in London. Filled with humor, and all the varying chaos that comes with clashing beliefs, desires, and motivations, this novel widely explores the experiences of those just trying to get by. The prose has a unique flare that gives the impression of living alongside each character as the years go by, the emotions building up until they finally implode. "

"White Teeth shines brightest during its many humorous moments and its many true to human nature characters are throughly entertaining. Smith touches on a variety of interesting themes, but the execution is scattered and her grand vision never quite comes together. However, even as a first introduction to Zadie Smith, White Teeth showcases enough of her literary chops that first time Smith readers would be more than likely to continue exploring her works."
