From the New York Times best-selling creator of the Vanderbeekers series comes a triumphant tale of friendship, healing, and the power of believing in ourselves, told from the perspectives of two biracial sixth graders living in a homeless shelter. At first, June can’t believe it: their new home is a homeless shelter? When she’s told she can’t bring her cherished viola inside, she’s convinced the worst luck in the world landed her at Huey House. But Tyrell has lived at Huey House for three years, and he knows all the good things about it: friendship, hot meals, and the music from next door drifting through the windows. With his help, June begins to see things differently. Just as she’s starting to understand how Huey House can be a home, a new government policy threatens all the residents. Can June and Tyrell work together to find a way to save Huey House as they know it?

"This book made my heart sing! Karina Yan Glaser writes the best middle-grade books EVER!! I recommend her Vanderbeekers series to everyone, and I will now be recommending A Duet For Home as well! I hugged the book when I finished it, which I only do to books that touched my soul. First of all, the book features characters who LOVE music! Also, it spotlighted a homeless shelter (the author used to work at one) and highlighted the problems that homeless people face. It expertly handles trauma that so many kids face! I fell in love with these characters, and my only complaint is that I wish the story had focused more on Tyrell's perspective, because his story was super complex and interesting. Anyone old enough to read should read this book, though there should be a trusted adult nearby to answer the inevitable questions, because this book definitely gets kids thinking about their world!"
"I have absolutely love Karina Yan Glaser's work, she’s become a favorite author of mine. Reading A Duet for Home gave me so much more appreciation for her writing I’m just so glad I came across her writing all these years ago with ‘The Vanderbeekers’.
A Duet for home touches on topics of homelessness in the youth community, a topic not often heard about, but so important. Reading it brought me to tears more than once, and gave me a new sense of gratefulness for my own life. Because I can only imagine all the many stories like that of June and Tyrell’s all across the world, and it’s heartbreaking.
It also brought me to tears after remembering a story from my own life. When I was in grade school, I had a friend, who had just moved to town, whom I loved to play with and talk to, and I remember her mentioning she didn’t live with her parents, but I was so young I didn’t understand. Until one day, she stopped coming to school, and I realized years later that she likely was moved into a different shelter home.. I think about her often, and always hope she’s happy, healthy, and safe.
A beautiful story, so inspirational, so heart warming, and eye opening.
A novel I recommend to all readers, of all ages. This one is one you’ll remember always."
