Named one of "The 20 Greatest Ever Romance Novels According to Goodreads Reviews" by O, The Oprah Magazine Young interior designer Ava O'Shea has no idea what awaits her at the Manor. A run-of-the-mill consultation with a stodgy country gent seems likely, but what Ava finds instead is Jesse Ward--a devastatingly handsome, utterly confident, pleasure-seeking playboy who knows no boundaries. Ava doesn't want to be attracted to this man, and yet she can't control the overwhelming desire that he stirs in her. She knows that her heart will never survive him and her instinct is telling her to run, but Jesse is not willing to let her go. He wants her and is determined to have her.

"I was very ambivalent about this book and torn between a 2 and 3-star rating. I finally opted for the higher rating since I did go on to read the second in the series.

One of the things that bugged me was this book seems to follow the general formula of 50 Shades of Grey - without as much depth.
Examples:
In 50 Shades: a very rich, older man who has control issues and likes to dominate his partner for unknown reasons is very attracted to a younger, less experienced girl (a virgin in 50 Shades).
In This Man: a very rich, older man who has control issues and likes to dominate his partner (apparently only this partner, not others) for unknown reasons is very attracted to a younger, less experienced girl.
That wouldn't have bothered me so much if there was more to Jesse (This Man). We don't really start to see his issues until the very end of the first book and by then it's really hard for me to connect with him. In 50 Shades, you got glimpses of Christian's issues and for better or worse, you at least started to understand some of his motivations.

Also apparently modeled after 50 Shades:
-- there is Ana's best friend Kate who ends up with Christian's brother (in This Man, Ava has a best friend, also Kate, who ends up with Jesse's friend
-- Ana's boss who wants to sleep with her; in This Man, Ava's potential client wants to sleep with her
-- In 50 Shades there is the "other woman" (in two women) who create problems for the relationship - the older woman who helped make Christian the man he is and one of his subs; in This Man the "other woman" is one of Jesse's employees and the numerous women he slept with that he still interacts with.
-- both women "run" away from their older men but in 50 Shades her running away made sense. In This Man, some of her running away made sense, some didn't
And so many more similarities that it became distracting for me. I realize that authors will be inspired by others but it almost seemed formulaic.

Another thing that really bugged me was how much Jesse basically used sex to control Ava, not just during sex but to influence her decisions, etc. And I'm finding it hard to believe that he's really falling for her in an emotional sense. His actions sound like a guy with a new toy that he doesn't want to share, not a guy falling in love. And while I can see agreeing to something in the throes of passion but if you're really not into it, then you stick to your guns after, which Ava didn't do. For as much as she seems to put up a fight, in the end she always gives in and seems too passive.

What I did like and what kept me reading was the dialogue, even the fighting. She sometimes did stand up for herself which I liked; I just wished she'd continued to do that. Also liked the back-and-forth about his age.

So if you do decide to read this book, I would say stick with it for the end and the second one because some things are finally made clearer. I wasn't entirely satisfied with the answers (didn't seem to be enough for his drastically controlling behavior) but at least there are answers.
"
"Jesse Ward is so Hot!

I have to say when I started this book I couldn't understand how woman like Ava could just go along with all the controlling behaviour. I had my suspicions about his past since about the middle of the book. I only wish Ava had more backbone throughout the book. Starting number 2 again."
