A Polish village overlooked by Nazis remains hidden until a troubled local marriage launches them into the twenty-first century in this imaginative debut.Spared by the Holocaust and the Cold War, the tiny Jewish shtetl of Kreskol existed in happy isolation, virtually untouched and unchanged for decades. But when a local couple disappears, the existence of Kreskol soon makes headlines nationwide, and the whole town comes crashing into the twenty-first century. Divided between those embracing change and those clinging to its old-world ways, the people of Kreskol will have to find a way to come together, or risk their village disappearing for good.Winner, National Jewish Book Award Winner, Jewish Fiction Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries

"The voice in this is super fun and parts of it were genuinely affecting (I loved the story about the "heroic" census taker, and the schism in the town between the two Rabbis who had heard the story of the Holocaust as children was devastating). The book was way too long, though, with a lot of wasted page time, a pointless ending, and terrible writing about women.

1.5 rounded up"

"A captivating story about the dangers that lie within both the unfamiliar and the familiar. Gross’ narrator seemed so real I could almost hear their voice recounting the story of Kreskol to me. A great read. #storytelling #storytellers #folklore #polish_fiction #jewish #yiddish #coming_of_age #comingofage #mystery_fiction #lost_city #shtetl "
