Yet what is the norm in the Western world?Mental illness and chronic disease are on an unstoppable rise. How did we get here? And what lies ahead for us?'It all starts with waking up... to what our bodies are expressing and our minds are suppressing.'In this life-affirming book, Gabor Maté connects the dots between our personal suffering and the relentless pressures of modern life – showing that ill health is a natural reflection of our disconnection from our true selves. Drawing on four decades of clinical experience, and stories of people transforming their bodies and minds, Dr Maté offers a hopeful pathway to reconnection and healing.

"This is suuuuch a fantastic book. As with anything, the reader is likely to find things that they connect with and other things they don’t, but his ability to look not only at the whole person but the CONTEXT of the person in this world we’re in along with anecdotes from his own life and his own unhelpful tendencies made an incredibly dense and heavy book a very approachable one. I will carry some of his gems with me for a long time."

"This is a much needed book in today's world where we disproportionately prioritize tangible and physical things both in our daily lives and also in science and medicine. This book grounds us into how the powerful dualism of mind+body rather than the separate artificial reductive categories of "body" and "mind" created by humans to make things simpler. This book also makes a strong case against governmental (and hence societal) subsidization of capitalism culture and how government has a much loftier goal than being a puppeteer of corporations. People, and doctors, should never forget that mindbody is intricately intertwined and any failure to take into account both of them simultaneously would always lead to a partial, if not misleading, picture and conclusion."
