"Sean Penn leads this off-beat, darkly comedic neo-noir. Penn plays a man on the run from his bookies (who he has already lost a couple of fingers to). His car breaks down in tiny desert town full of eccentric locals and the town becomes his hallucinogenic purgatory. The mechanic (Billy Bob Thornton) is holding his car hostage. He gets mixed up in the strange relationships between a man who married his step-daughter (Nick Nolte & JLo) and young waitress and her Neanderthal boyfriend (Claire Daines & Joaquin Pheonix).
The studio was obviously looking to capitalize on the success of the Coen Brothers and Tarantino but this feels a little forced at times and doesn’t have the boundless energy that Pulp Fiction or Fargo have. Still, it’s an entertaining movie with a great cast. Oliver Stone directs and the film’s failure at the box office probably helped push him back toward doing the political stuff that has dominated the 2nd half of his career.
