"4⭐️ THIS IS NOT A ROMCOM. I REPEAT NOT A ROMCOM 📣 Now that that’s established, it reminded me more of the indie arthouse glory years of the 90s/00s in terms of style and quintessential “I’m too cool for you” indie vibes of the time. I’m thinking of films like Chasing Amy, Singles, Reality Bites, High Fidelity etc etc etc. The MC is that kind of disaffected holier than thou slacker a-hole. It’s still very much in the present though with a lot less sitting around exchanging witticisms and angst and lot more cultural satire and accurate representation. All of which tracks given the spot on Oakland/Berkeley setting and location filming. And all of which means I pretty much loved it lol. It’s quippy, cringey, a bit depressive and really really funny 👍👍"
"Director Randall Park made a beautiful looking movie. A true dramedy, with some absolutely hilarious scenes and others so cringe you want to look away/turn it off. Unfortunately, it’s about the biggest narcissistic male member-head who is giving a master class in gaslighting. Not fun. The cast is really amazing, including the head. But, for me, it was painful to watch. "
"This was a great film! It has everything from awkward moments of hilarity to downright depressing moments of disappointment. There are lots a familiar faces in this too, for instance I was surprised but also enjoyed seeing Debbie Ryan in this. It’s definitely a plus for me that this was directed by Randall Park who is always great whenever I see him and it’s also great to see Asian representation in western media that is not only not stereotypical but actually challenges some western narratives regarding relationships and Asian cultures all in this one film. Sure, there are some cringe moments tbf but it’s worth it for the character’s growth which is evident by the end of the film. So if you want a character development type film that feels very much like a sort of off kilter rom com at times then this is definitely worth a watch! "
