"A fantastic film. Really well made, it does a spectacular job of highlighting systemic racism (in a manner that never feels preachy) as well as the tough circumstances that Rubin Carter found himself in right from childhood, juxtapositioning his story with that of Lesra Martin being inspired by Rubin’s memoir to spearhead the efforts to release Rubin from prison. Phenomenal direction by Norman Jewison (who has always been socially conscious from the start, especially since he directed IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (1967) as well), as well as editing. None of this would be possible without the phenomenal lead performance by Denzel Washington, who does a great job of embodying his character and conveying his state of mind, including a very convincing physical transformation as well (I’m so glad he got Oscar-nominated for this, and I now believe his Oscar should’ve come for this instead of TRAINING DAY IMO). A fantastic film worth watching.
Side Note: That Rod Steiger cameo was amazing to see, especially considering the fact that he was in the movie IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (and won the Best Actor Oscar for it)."
