"May is a very Cathartic movie for me? A lonely girl who has very little to no social skills trying to finally feel like she can have a friend or two, and maybe feel like she has a place in the world. But her weird and off putting social style only makes her more Alienated from her peers and eventually pushes her to make her own “friend”. If you where ever the weird girl you can easily put your self in Mays shoes (to an extent) and maybe can get some cathartic Release. If boys can have a Problematic fave so can girls! "
"Saw this for the first time when I was about 16/17 and thought it was the weirdest movie ever made. Now that I'm older I just rewatched it for the first time since the original experience and don't find it as odd as I did then. Not saying this isn't a bizarre and odd watch bc it absolutely is. But I "get it" now. "
"Pride Day 7: May is a pretty solid horror flick with a casually bisexual protagonist. Like the protagonist moves from a relationship with a man to a relationship with a woman and it's not really treated as a big deal. This probably shouldn't be surprising to me but it kind of was, especially in the mid 2000s. I feel I should mention, this is a horror movie and one that gets kind of brutal at times. I think it's good fun but my tolerance for horror is scuffed and not a lot really bothers me so be warned. There are also LGBTQ characters in some of Lucky McKee (the director)'s other films. I believe All Cheerleaders Die and Sick Girl both star gay women but I'm not suggesting those because I honestly just don't think they're as good as May. Unless I really start running out of movies later then forget you saw that. Also, bonus suggestion for the FMV game Phantasmagoria 2 for another piece of not super progressive on it's face horror media with a suprisingly casually bisexual protagonist. Also not gonna suggest Phantasmagoria 2 because it's a video game and not a movie but I really like it."
"May took a few watches for me, if I’m going to be honest. First watch, I wasn’t too hopeful. Looked like a low-quality movie only popular for having a “relatable” character. But after a few times looking over it, the beauty of it really sinks in. I enjoy the plot and how May’s mental decline is portrayed. Don’t like the lesbian girl though. Bad acting on her part."
