In the summer of 1941, the United States and Japan seem on the brink of war after constant embargos and failed diplomacy come to no end. "Tora! Tora! Tora!", named after the code words used by the lead Japanese pilot to indicate they had surprised the Americans, covers the days leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor, which plunged America into the Second World War.

"Historically accurate, the movie starts methodically, slowly ratcheting up the tension that releases explosively on December 7th. Three years in production it was filmed from both the Japanese AND American perspective, the film casts included new actors and amateurs from both countries (several of whom were veterans of WWII) speaking their own languages with subtitles employed.
Contemporary critics were not kind - claiming the first half of the film too slow for American audiences and citing the lack of big name stars (ironically, several subsequently became major character actors). The reception by Japanese audiences and critics was decidedly better. The film was deservedly nominated for 5 technical Academy Awards (there was no CGI in 1968-1970 - all the action shots are a seamless combination of minatures and full scale reenactments) accompanied by a full orchestral soundtrack.
Though it makes us do our homework, fifty years later this remains one of the very best WWII movies. History brought alive through intertwined stories."
