"When Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) became a surprise hit, a sequel was inevitable. Enter Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, a lighter, more comedic follow-up that leans further into the cartoonish fun while stepping away from the grittier tone of its predecessor.
The film picks up where the first left off, with the Turtles—Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael—still living in the shadows, fighting crime, and consuming an absurd amount of pizza. This time, they uncover the origins of the mysterious ooze that mutated them, leading to the return of their arch-nemesis, The Shredder. In a bid to defeat the Turtles, Shredder uses the ooze to create two new mutants: Tokka and Rahzar, monstrous but dim-witted creatures meant to rival our heroes.
As the Turtles team up with a new ally, Keno (Ernie Reyes Jr.), a martial arts-savvy pizza delivery guy, they must stop Shredder's plans before he becomes even more powerful. Along the way, we’re treated to slapstick humor, fun action sequences, and a particularly memorable scene featuring a Vanilla Ice cameo with the now-infamous "Ninja Rap".
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze is a fun, fast-paced sequel that leans heavily into kid-friendly antics. While it lacks the darker, more engaging narrative of the first film, it still delivers enjoyable action, humor, and an unforgettable ‘90s cheese factor. If you're looking for a nostalgic trip or a lighthearted family film, it's worth a revisit—but don’t expect the same magic as the original.
Best Enjoyed With: A large pizza and zero expectations for serious storytelling."
