"This is Jean-Pierre Melville’s riveting and tense drama about The French Resistance. Melville based the film on his own experiences as a member during WW2. It dispenses with Robin Hood-esque ambushes and patriotic speeches and instead paints a terrifying portrait of what it is actually like to be under occupation. Their goals seem small, gather and transmit intel when they can and ensure that their network survives for the hypothetical allied offensive. However, the SS are systematically trying to root out the resistance. Paranoia reigns amongst the membership and they are forced to make nightmarish choices to ensure the survival of their organization. Lino Ventura is great as weary but resolute resistance leader. It’s a tough watch but it is a great film. 5 out of 5 stars"
