"Capt. Stanley: Make no mistake, Mr. Burns. It will be done. I will civilize this place.
Charlie Burns: The f*** are you talking about, Stanley?
This Australian western is poetic and brutal. It’s populated by malevolent groups of colonialists, outlaws, soldiers and aborigines but they’re all dwarfed by setting. The Outback is captured here as such a hellscape that it makes the American Wild West seem like Disneyland by comparison. The film is very dark and takes its time but it is a powerful experience. Penned by musician Nick Cave and featuring a terrific cast, this is one of my favorite westerns. 5 out of 5 stars."
