"This film was such a high energy romp that its almost two hour runtime just flew by. It’s the origin story of a pirate and it was Errol Flynn’s first major role. It’s directed by Michael Curtiz, who brought the same light touch and technical skill here that he brought to movies like Casablanca and Robin Hood. I would be shocked if this wasn’t THE main inspiration for the writers of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. So many scenes in that movie are straight lifts or rifts on scenes from this movie (minus the cursed skeleton parts). 4 out of 5 stars"
