"This was an incredibly acted film, but I have so many lingering questions which I believe that the film never answered. The director made sure that the edgy and dark atmosphere of a mysterious abbey in which murders were taking place and realism of life in a medieval abbey was correct, but as good as the plot was, I believe the construction mystery could have been much better. Either way, the entire cast was perfect for their respective roles, and I enjoyed seeing each actor in a film that was so different from others I have seen each star in. It was still worth the watch. (Warning: ⚠️ Brief nudity, and one sex scene.)"
"This is an Agatha Christie style manor murder mystery moved to an abbey in the 13th century, with the investigators, suspects and victims all being monks. Sean Connery is the lead as a traveling Franciscan who is asked to investigate. He is such a humanist in this den of apocalyptic superstition and political scheming, that it’s a wonder he wasn’t arrested or killed as soon as he entered the door.
The production design is very good (they apparently shot in an old abbey) and that helps keep its foreboding and shadowy visuals from crossing into camp. A very young Christian Slater and a crazed Ron Perlman co-star. The plot is the weakness. It feels like a rough first draft of an adaptation. Some key scenes seem to be missing and others are unnecessarily long and drawn out. Connery’s character will be locked in his room in one scene and then be roaming around freely in the next w/ no explanation. In the end it is a good movie that, with a more polished script, could’ve been a great one. 3.5/5 stars"
