After his rich father refuses to pay his debt, compulsive gambler Lawrence Bourne III joins the Peace Corps to evade angry creditors. In Thailand, he is assigned to build a bridge for the local villagers with the help of American-As-Apple-Pie WSU Grad Tom Tuttle and the beautiful and down-to earth Beth Wexler. What they don't realize is that the bridge is coveted by the U.S. Army, a local Communist force, and a powerful drug lord. Together with the help of At Toon, the only English speaking native, they must fight off the three opposing forces and find out what is right for the villagers, as well as themselves.

"This is just a silly film with so many ridiculous things happening: Peace Corps, Black Market Don, Sumo Wrestler Bodyguards, John Candy brainwashed by a military 🎖️ commander, and Tom Hanks trying to hook up with Rita Wilson. (Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson married not too long after they starred in this film together.) What cracks me up is Tom Hanks pompous elite accent and Rita Wilson speaking with a New York accent. It was an early film, so she doesn't have an accent in later films in her career."
"Running from a gambling debt, a rich guy enters the Peace Corps without knowing where he is going. Once there he brings his way of life to a village in Thailand, while they build a bridge to the other side of the river. Worth watching to see who is observing the village and who has plans within plans of this buddy comedy!"
