"“I believe in myself and I am answerable to myself. I will not live according to printed mottos like the directions on a medicine bottle!”
Vincent Price is magnetic as vainglorious, manipulative and abusive land baron Nicholas Van Ryn, whether he is prowling the halls of his gothic estate, seducing the heroine within hours of his wife’s passing, brooding in his secret tower room, or attempting to maintain a weakening grasp on the farmers he exploits and oppresses.
So magnetic, one might even say, that you’re only too willing to excuse the heavy-handed social criticism, Bible thumping, and cardboardy performances of the other two leads. A gothic classic."
