"Such an incredible film, with a powerful ending! I never expected this film to be filled with so much emotion, heartbreak, and gravitas, as well as be deeply philosophical, while simultaneously serve as an uplifting and hopeful reminder that we must carry on in life no matter what happens, and that we require courage to face both the ups and downs in life. This is the kind of film that more people need to be seeing and talking about for this specific life lesson especially. This is a simple story of an elderly comedian past his prime and his meeting of a woman who attempts suicide and how their lives change. Phenomenal storytelling, along with stellar acting (Chaplin himself as well as Claire Bloom MVP). Beautiful score too (co-composed by Chaplin, Larry Russell and Raymond Rasch) along with editing. Memorable cameo by Buster Keaton as well (the only time Keaton and Chaplin shared screen space) It has now become one of my favorite films. This must be required viewing for all IMO.
P.S.: It is incredibly bittersweet that this is the film that got Charlie Chaplin his only competitive Oscar under rather extraordinary circumstances. His film didn’t qualify for Academy Awards consideration until 20 years after release (1972) thanks to the rules requiring LA screenings at the time (which didn’t happen until that year), and THE GODFATHER was disqualified from Original Score consideration due to a technicality, clearing the way to Chaplin’s only win (he won Original Score, along with co-composers Larry Russell and Raymond Rasch) as a result. Moreover, Russell and Rasch had both been dead for many years when they won."
