"This is the Bakshi movie you can watch with your parents and probably be fine. An exploration of 20th Century American history as told through the lens of one family having immigrated to New York at the turn of the century and are involved in all the biggest American music movements from 1900 to the 1980s. It's very ambitious for Bakshi, probably more ambitious than he had the ability to do as the emotional throughline isn't terribly compelling and some of the descendants are more interest than others.
The musical segments of popular American music through the years are at very least done incredibly well with a mixture of the rotoscoped artstyle from the rest of the movie, live-action footage, and a lot of tripping distortion to make some cool music videos. And i think it's a good and interesting idea. Definitely style over substance when all is said and done but I'm kinda okay with that."
