"I finally watched this one yesterday for the first time. The scenery is gorgeous. I liked lots of it but I struggle with lots of it. The racism, the brutality of it but there is also spirit and humanity in it as well. There is lots of movie trivia associated with this one. I would follow this movie up with the classic Western 'Unforgiven' with Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn. It has some similar themes."

"I wasn’t expecting to like this movie, because I never really watched many westerns. After watching it I’m a big John Wayne fan, and I appreciate a good western!"

"An imperfect but interesting examination of the racism inherent to much of the Western genre especially that of the 30s and 40s and staring John Wayne. It's a self reflection of sorts and perhaps it's greedy or unreasonable of me to want or expect more but I kind of do. I wrote a LOT about this on letterboxd but there's a lot to cover to form a complete impression of this movie."

"It’s well made from a production standpoint, and Marty’s character makes it entertaining, but the rampant racism makes this movie a struggle to watch. I watched it for class and I don’t think I will watch it again."
