Based on the real life of Barry Seal, they did add in a few things that a) didn't happen or b) wasn't a real person or c) wasn't the actual name of a person. Regardless of that, I believe most of this is true. Someone said it was miscast with Tom Cruise. I wholeheartedly disagree. I'm 54 and I grew up watching his movies from the very beginning but he never really floated my boat. I didn't find him attractive and I thought he was overhyped. It has only been in the last few years that I've started realizing he's a pretty good actor and kinda cute too! I don't care about his real life. He's just a guy who makes movies. All humans are flawed and make mistakes. He's not on a pedestal for me. I just like him as an actor now. I think he aged nicely until fairly recently. He's looking kinda haggard lately. But I digress! He was great in this! I have no idea what the real Barry Seal was like but the way TC plays him, you can't help but to like him. He did bad things. He did good things. Whatever he did, I found myself wanting him to succeed.
I loved the cinematography and the groovy feel of the '70s but mostly I loved the story. I felt like I was reliving the '70s and '80s. All this stuff was all over the tv and magazines back then. I'm actually part Nicaraguan so I paid a little more attention to those news pieces than to others even though it mostly just went over my head. I enjoyed learning more about what was going on and finally understanding it. I can't imagine liking it as much if it weren't for Tom Cruise though. He was fantastic!"
