"A great theatrical adaptation of the stage musical, that is itself based off a book adapted from the Wizard of Oz. Flushing out the characters of Oz, while staying true to the original storyline of Wizard of Zo though with a twist unseen if you haven’t seen the full musical on stage!!! Worth watching as the ending completes the first half of the musical yet makes you wish Part two of Wicked was out just a bit sooner!!"
"As someone who saw Wicked on Broadway, I felt the same way watching this film as I did when I saw the curtain rise that day, only elevated. This was the ultimate love letter to Broadway and the original production of Wicked. I wore a smile a mile wide the entire film. This movie was stunning perfection. I was a doubter for some of the castings originally, but there is not a single person I would recast, especially Ariana and Cynthia, who were both a revelation. They were born to play Glinda and Elphaba respectively. I’ve never broken out into happy tears multiple times watching a movie, but the two’s clear bond and sisterhood made me sob. I now understand why they were so touched in every interview. I was moved and I didn’t even live it. Jonathan Bailey was also a standout. The music was awe-inspiring. The production design was flawless. This is how you adapt a musical with love and care. Bravo Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Bravo John Chu. If there is justice in the world, you will reap your rewards at the Oscars. "
"Spoilers ahead:
So I have never seen the play and I have never read the book. My mum wouldn't let me when I was little. All I knew going in was the witch was good, not evil. Her sister wore the slippers to make her walk. And, there is a man with spikes on his face.
I was so excited to see this as I've been wanting to see the play for years, but could never afford it.
I was so disappointed.
Everyone in the film can sing better than I can, but only the witch was actually decent. Everyone, but the witch were either talk singing or singing so high they could break glass.
Most of the characters made me angry, especially her father, glinda, the "witch" teacher, and the wizard.
What is with the animal abuse? I would love it if my cat could talk.
Oh and the beginning of the movie, they are celebrating her death as if she is Hitler. So far she seems like the kindest soul. They are all a**holes.
It was fun to watch with my boyfriend. I'm not sure if I'll watch the second half. "
"The music, the dancing, the characters, the visuals, & the story. Everything was insanely wicked. Whether you're a fan of the musical or someone who's never heard of it, you're going to enjoy it. I will say I don't know anyone who hasn't seen Wizard of Oz & gone into this so I can't vouch for that.
The music is catchy, every song wants to stick in your ear, and you'll have to put one on repeat afterwards. The dancing is outrageously big & dynamic, no number is lacking. The characters are clear and memorable. The same ones that make you laugh will make you cry at the same time. The visuals truly showcase the world of Oz. And if you watch the movie with your blue light off you'll see.nothing but green and pink in every shot. It's a great attention to detail that you only accidentally come across. Now the story, it does stay true to both its source material and the musical it inspired. Plus they showcase it in a way that a newbie (like me) still understands and can dig more into later.
So why only 4 stars and not 5? Because it's a part 1 movie. I understand why they did that. They wanted to fit the entire thing into their story and one movie wouldn't cut it. They would have to do 2. Yet despite the split this movie is not lacking. There aren't needless moments. Everything has a purpose. The reason it only being part 1 upsets me is they deceived people. Again, I understand why truly I do, but it doesn't justify the deception. No trailer said this would only be part 1. Honestly, I'm happy they made it a 2 parter, despite having to wait a year for part 2, but it doesn't change that fact.
Still, it's a outstanding movie, great cast, & one families can enjoy too. It gives us those dystopia vibes our society loves to eat up (hunger games, etc.) While being uplifting & fun. There are serious moments that are portrayed so your kids can understand them too. It can easily become a classic, & clearly it proved people love this take on the classic tale, the Wizard of Oz."
"An astoundingly well made film that essentially serves as the origin story of the 2 witches of THE WIZARD OF OZ (with part 2 releasing next year). Without question the production design, costumes, makeup, and VFX are the best things about the film (won’t be surprised if it wins Oscars in all 4 categories, and it would be legitimately well deserved). Fantastic songs as well, as well as performances. Cynthia Erivo is easily the MVP acting-wise, although Ariana Grande was really well cast as well (I hope Erivo gets nominated for Best Actress), and both have great singing voices too. Without question a film that deserves to be watched on the big screen. Highly recommended."
