"It's not easy making a dramedy about mental illness and depression/suicide but I think they got this show right. If you're going to create a movie based on this subject matter, you're not going to please everyone but I really felt a connection to the people in this story. I have tried to...you know...five times, I believe. I've been in the ICU for days with them not sure if I would make it. And I've been in two mental institutions. (All between the ages of 14 and 29.) I know how the main character felt being in a "loony bin" (my words, not his in the movie) with people who were doing some really strange things while feeling like you don't belong there because you're not crazy, just suicidal. I like how they showed how people experience and portray depression differently. Not everyone is the same. At 55 years old, I am no longer suicidal but I will always have depression and I really connected with the Egyptian man who only wanted to sleep. Sometimes I think I might never get out of bed again.
A sad story about the writer of the teen novel this movie was based on named Ned Vizzini... He experienced severe clinical depression and spent time in a psychiatric ward in his twenties. He ended his life at age 32 by jumping off a building. I haven't read the book but if it's exactly like the movie, I would say he did an amazing job of exploring mental illness and depression in a way that could help people while also giving us a break from all the drama with some comedy and endearing characters. The movie ended well and gave hope to those of us who understand that we will never be 100% but we can find things worth living for. And it saddens me that he was just unable to take his own advice in the book to find happiness in just breathing.
I very much enjoyed this movie. Don't let the subject matter deter you from watching it. It's well worth a watch."
"A great movie that will prove to be relatable to every one. Hilarious and well cast too."
