"Hugo is a very weird movie, and I understand why it leaves a bad taste in people mouths. However, I feel it is a near perfect love letter to not only Georges Méliès but Cinema as a whole.
Hugo is not the standard Hollywood movie, as it has four acts instead of the usual three; likely as an homage to Méliès and his movies. This is both amazing and detrimental to the film itself. The average person watching the movie will likely feel like Hugo is bloated and doesn't have a consistent plot, but people who have studied films will love seeing a different act structure; especially in a movie that focuses a decent amount on the art of film.
Cinematography wise, Hugo is a masterpiece. CGI and reality is blended so seamlessly sometimes I can't decipher which is which. The intro scene is beautiful and I can't imagine how long it took to make something that grand. I also love how every color is some shade of either teal or orange in order to create a truly unique viewing experience. Not to mention it was shot in such a way that allows it to be understood without sound. The audio only gives depth to what we Instinctually understand is happening by character movements and camerawork.
There's also a TON of camera shots that harken back to the Golden Age of cinema. And it's always fantastic to recognize one, and be given more depth to a scene because of it.
The story is pretty good, it has a bunch of great characters and subverts a lot of expectations. Everyone is fleshed out and has some sort of character arc.
I truly think this movie is a masterpiece, please give it a watch. "
