"This Soviet-era Estonian detective film is incredibly unique. It begins with a standard setup of a detective being called out to isolated hotel to investigate a tip about a guest, who may be a sought after criminal, but it quickly escalates from there. The film takes surrealism, film-noir, an Agatha Christie style murder mystery, a disguised political allegory and possible science fiction elements and puts them in blender. The result is a sometimes uneven but always fascinating piece of atmospheric film making. The synth heavy score, which is very reminiscent of the score Kubrick would later use for The Shining, sets a very ominous tone for the film. This isn’t an easy film to track down but it is well worth the effort to do so.
4 out of 5 Stars"
