"This is the unhappy biography of the tragic, privileged, full life of a writer who managed to leave a mark on Western society for decades. It's directed by her famous nephew, Griffin Dunne, the actor. It might tell you things you didn't know about her, but this film will not inspire you or lift you up. It lists facts more than it tells a story, like an accountant's record, with personal reference interviews. You might expect more. Seeing the most recent interviews may distress you as Joan appears frail and somewhat addled, though her thoughts are clear enough. Perhaps none of this is surprising, given her writing. "Don’t watch this on a bad hair day. Although I’m not thrilled with the movie itself it’s worth seeing if you love her writing or high quality writing."
