"This film was good...for about 5 minutes. It had the promise of being a fair suspense thriller, but failed miserably. This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Awkwafina didn't have many lines, and it was hard to see her be so unconvincing in a role. She seemed bored. The supporting actors were okay, but the plot would make any actor look like a fool for signing the contract to play a role. Milla Jovovich didn't know what this movie was about either. Too bad, ladies."
"This is 2.5*s, but I'm rounding up, not down, because of the stunning sets/costumes.
I'm currently in an Emma Roberts kick & have been watching all her movies. This one was beautiful & kept me interested, but there was a lot missing for me. It was definitely rushed. They built all these beautiful sets & costumes (think bondage meets the Queen of Hearts), only to not give enough time to the story itself. This needed a much longer run time in order to give it a more epic feel, but I think making it into a limited series would have been best. (I love limited series because I tend to get tired of shows that go more than two to three seasons.)
Fyi, if you're looking for the LGBT+ parts of this movie, they aren't front and center, & I would hardly call this an LGBT movie.
There was a huge whimsical/vintage/steam punk quality to the sets & costumes. It was also dystopian but I'm not sure in what way. Is it our world in the future or some other reality? I can't remember if any real names of places on our earth were mentioned so I'm not sure but the way people were dressed at the ball was very different from the way Uma (Emma) was dressed when she first wakes up on the island. She was wearing a dirty robe & pj's that looked like a Walmart special. And they showed other instances of people not on the island or at the ball, living a regular life & their clothes looked normal so I'm kinda confused. Maybe the ball was meant to be some kind of costume ball, I don't know. Just another way it felt rushed. Also, the car flew. It was just odd and demanded a lot of questions be answered.
SPOILER BELOW
The vampire rose lady was.....out there. She needed much more background. She wasn't fleshed out at all. Who was she? How did she get there? Did she start the "business" or is she trapped, as she seemed to imply early on? Yeah, just a rushed job on what could have been a really good story. Why put so much $ into sets/costumes if you aren't gonna go the extra mile in story telling?

"An absolute cinematic gem. From its captivating storyline to its visually stunning world-building, this film is a true masterpiece. The performances by the talented cast are exceptional, drawing you into a mysterious and intriguing narrative.
The imaginative and beautifully crafted setting of Paradise Hills is a feast for the eyes, with its lush gardens, ornate architecture, and surreal atmosphere. The film's exploration of societal pressures, conformity, and the struggle for individuality is thought-provoking and relevant.
The direction and cinematography are top-notch, creating a dreamlike quality that keeps you engaged from start to finish. It's a unique blend of science fiction, fantasy, and psychological thriller, offering a fresh take on familiar themes.
It's an enthralling cinematic experience that will leave you pondering its deeper meaning long after the credits roll. If you're a fan of visually striking films with substance, this is an absolute must-see. "
"The cinematography, costumes, props and sets were all beautifully whimsical. I definitely love movies that are of this style. I am a huge fan of plot twists and this movie did not disappoint. Although I think it would have been even better as a limited series, I wouldn't mind at all diving more into this symbolic story and seeing more of its beautiful imagery. "
"I find it difficult to rate this movie. I loved the idea, the world-building potential, the plot, the settings, and the ending, but this movie itself felt rushed. Like there could have been so much more depth and diversity to it's world and it's characters, but instead it felt like a vast story world got paraphrased into 1 film. I would very much so LOVE a remake into a series of movies or a miniseries."
"I can never remember the name of this one."
