"Watching this in memory of the late great Dame Maggie Smith, and what a film it is! An extremely well-written and acted film of a teacher in an all-girls school and the impact she has (very DEAD POETS SOCIETY-esque in that regard, but the approach is very different). Easily the MVP of this film was the lead performance by Maggie Smith, who is able to portray the teacher with a rather naive and romanticized worldview in such a believable manner on top of projecting a persona that portrays the sheer inner joy she felt in doing her job, the latter aspect also coming across in Maggie's off-screen persona through her interviews too (an extremely well deserved Best Actress Oscar win (probably a Top 5 win)). She is supported by strong supporting cast as well (Gordon Jackson, Maggie real-life then-husband Robert Stephens, and Pamela Franklin among others) who are all also outstanding. Very highy recommended.
Side note: Apart from her persona, another thing that struck me about Maggie Smith in real life was the sheer zest for life she had in general, a quality that all of us should strive for. What a presence Maggie Smith was and she will be dearly missed. I literally cannot wait to watch CALIFORNIA SUITE (1978), which won Maggie her 2nd Oscar (this time for Supporting Actress)."
