The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion

"A little slow for most of the movie, but when it really kicks in , the last third of the movie pays off big time. Looking forward to seeing part 2. I'm hoping it continues with the momentum that it built in this first part. I give it a 7/10. ( As long as you don't mind reading subtitles.)"

I liked the plot a lot but it drags out the set up to the point that’s there’s not an action scene for the first hour of the movie. "This is a Korean take on the “human weapon meets their maker” sub-genre (not a spoiler: the film opens with a flashback of a girl escaping the training facility). Kim Da-mi shows some real range and charisma in the lead, as high school student caring for her ailing, adoptive parents and trying uncover the mysteries of her past. The film looks better than a lot of American big budget movies and takes some interesting turns that keep it from feeling too “by the numbers”. I’ve saw some complaints about the setup being slow, with the first 45 minutes having no action scenes. However, I think spending more time with the main character, her parents and her (annoying) best friend gives those relationships weight and makes the second half hit a lot harder. The action sequences are solid but I think the slow build made them feel better than they are. There is a sequel that has been released and I’m curious how good it will be as a, presumably, more wall-to-wall action film. This is an interesting action/drama and is available on many streamers, including Prime and Tubi. 3.75 out 5 Stars "
